Process and Chemical Analysis of a Deactivating Claus Second Converter Catalyst

A Claus second converter catalyst containing an additive to aid COS and CS2 conversion was replaced after analytical data showed the additive may have contributed to the deactivation mechanism. After a recommended change to a simple gamma alumina Claus catalyst, the deactivation was observed again. The replacement of a natural gas fired heater upstream of the catalyst bed ended the slow deactivation mechanism. A few years afterward, a whole-plant simulation of the sulfur recovery system with upgraded capabilities of the ProTreat simulation program was able to aid in the analysis of the operation while the catalyst degradation took place. The ProTreat analysis confirmed the observations obtained in further catalyst sample analyses.
